IPhO Student Leaders Attend SNPhA Conference
February 28, 2019

SNPHAFINALIPhO chapter leaders joined hundreds of student pharmacists from across the country in Washington D.C. for the 2019 Student National Pharmacists Association (SNPhA) Conference. The annual meeting keeps students up to date on topics like best practices in health care, available professional resources, career development, and more.

Mitchell Linton (National Student Officer of Professional Affairs), Kimberly Watson (Regional Student Officer of Southeast Region), and Jayla Briggs (IPhO Howard Chapter President) took advantage of the forum to help raise awareness among attendees about the growing prominence of pharmacist roles in industry. They shared their experiences working with IPhO and advised students on how to leverage available resources to secure an industry career and make a global impact on health care. The SNPhA conference provides an outlet for aspiring pharmacists to come together, learn from eachother, and discuss important industry topics—such as how to improve the representation of minority groups in the field.

IPhO thanks the SNPhA Howard University Chapter for the opportunity to exhibit. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with NPhA/SNPhA—a partnership that will continuously advocate the value that pharmacists bring to industry.

The Struggle (of Obtaining an Internship) is Real
February 20, 2019

InternshipWhen I started applying to pharmaceutical industry internships, it was like shooting darts in the dark. Knowing how difficult it was to obtain an internship, I attempted to present my best self in my applications by having my school's career center look over my resume and letters of intent. I also applied to internships as soon as I found them.

I faced many rejections before I received even one email to request an interview, and then even more rejections after the interviews I did get. I accepted any interview I could because I knew that any experience was valuable, especially when I was just starting out. In my personal experience, either a recruiter reached out for a preliminary phone call to discuss my resume and get to know me a bit before setting up an interview with the hiring manager, or the hiring manager contacted me directly. The number of interviews for each company varied from one to three.

IPhO and CCC Launch Certificate Program Focused on Industry Regulatory Compliance
January 28, 2019

ccc-graphics1 press releaseIndustry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO) and Center for Communication Compliance (CCC) have partnered to launch a Regulatory Compliance Certificate Program customized for students pursuing an industry career, as well as graduated pharmacists looking to break into industry. The program equips PharmDs with critical knowledge about foundational government and industry requirements that impact the roles and responsibilities of industry pharmacists.

“Compliance is a top priority for the pharmaceutical industry and the regulatory environment is very complex. This program covers key regulatory principles related to advertising and promotion and explains how these principles apply to the various types of product communications typically seen when working in industry,” comments IPhO consultant Leah Palmer, PharmD who was formerly Executive Director of Regulatory Promotion at Amgen.

The custom eLearning program features ten distinct modules on compliant promotional activities and scientific exchange, followed by a post-test that participants must pass to earn their certificate of achievement. Participants can also engage in interactive online games that help reinforce the regulations, guidances, and codes discussed in the coursework. Program content is reviewed for accuracy by former government officials and regulatory lawyers and updated based on material changes in regulatory policy.

“We are delighted to prepare future industry pharmacists to communicate scientifically balanced, medically accurate information that contributes to the development, commercialization, promotion, and optimal use of medicines,” states Ilyssa Levins, CCC President.

James Alexander, PharmD, IPhO Executive Director and Founder, adds that "this comprehensive certificate program is another example of how our organization is providing timely, relevant information to our members to help them advance their professional careers."

New Year’s Resolutions to Improve Your Communication Skills
January 16, 2019

This article was originally published on barbarapachtersblog.com.

It’s that time of year again – the time to make New Year’s resolutions. But instead of just going the traditional route – pledging to join a gym to work off holiday excesses – why not opt to give your career a boost as well? Resolve to improve your communication skills.

Yes, you read that last sentence correctly! How you communicate with others—whether in person, in writing, or online—has a tremendous impact on your career. It affects every aspect of your working life, no matter how good your specialized skills are in your particular field.

For the coming year, make these communication resolutions to enhance your career:

1. Resolve to keep your phone off the table when meeting with someone. Having your phone visible tells the other person, “I am so ready to drop you and connect with someone else.” It’s important to give people your full attention.

2. Take a presentation skills class. Work on becoming a better presenter. You need to get your point across. And if you do so effectively, not only does your audience gain information, but you look good.
