The 1st annual National Fellows Council (NFC) Live Summer Kick-Off Meeting was held in early August at Sanofi Genzyme in Cambridge, MA. Thirty NFC fellows from Boston, New York, New Jersey and North Carolina gathered face-to-face to kick off the new fellowship year. Typically, NFC work is done remotely as members are located across the country, so this opportunity to meet in person, network, and discuss the year's initiatives was invaluable.
Jim Alexander, IPhO Executive Director and Founder, and the NFC Co-Chiefs kicked off the meeting with opening remarks, followed by individual NFC committee presentations. Co-Chairs of the Student Development, Marketing & Social Media, Publications, Professional Programming, and the new Networking Committee provided the NFC with an overview of past accomplishments and initiatives, as well as goals for this upcoming year.
The NFC was then joined by guest speaker Jeff Hatfield, PharmD, MBA–CEO of Zafgen Pharmaceuticals–who shared his inspirational insight on building a leadership career in industry. He noted that change—being the only constant in one’s career—is one of the “primary sources of creativity” and stressed the importance of embracing uncomfortable challenges in order to achieve professional growth.
Jeff also discussed how best to prepare for success to foster career advancement, and provided tips on being a strong leader once that success is attained. His engaging discussion provided the NFC fellows in attendance with guidance on how to navigate their own advancing careers and reinforced the signifcance of the successes they have already achieved.
The afternoon concluded with individual committee breakout sessions and a networking social hour at a nearby restaurant. The NFC was grateful for the opportunity to come together, learn about upcoming initiatives, and build new relationships. There are many exciting developments on the horizon this year!
IPhO would like to thank Rosemary Boshar, Ariana Ayon Verduzco, Olivia Weiss, Mike Ryan, Jacob Martin, Dylan Atkinson, and the rest of the Professional Programming Committee for organizing this successful and engaging event!
