James Alexander, PharmD

Executive Director and Founder

The Executive Director and Founder of IPhO is James G. Alexander, PharmD, an alumnus of the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy. Jim enjoyed a 15-year career in the pharmaceutical industry and rose to the level of Vice President, Corporate Development and Licensing for Pfizer and Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis before moving to academia to become the first Director of the Rutgers Institute for Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowships. During this professionally rewarding 10-year period of his industry-focused career, he was responsible for the administration of the premier Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program for pharmacists and trained and mentored more than 400 PharmDs who are now working widely throughout the pharmaceutical/biopharma industry. Dr. Alexander is currently Executive Vice President at Strawn Arnold & Associates, a leading executive search firm.

Dr. Alexander is a strong advocate for the role that pharmacists can play in the pharmaceutical industry. In his role as Founder and Executive Director of IPhO, the first professional organization designed exclusively for industry-based pharmacists, Jim brings his distinguished experience in advocacy and professional development to support the professional careers of the growing number of industry-based pharmacists.

Jerry Silverman, BS Pharm, RPh

VP, Professional Development and Coaching

Jerry Silverman, BS Pharm, RPh is the former President and CEO of Bimark Medical Communications (1992–2008) where he utilized his extensive experience in pharmaceutical marketing, training, medical education, and managed care to build a very successful organization. He continues today working with a very selective group of clients in areas of training, development, and marketing. Mr. Silverman is most proud of his contributions to the professional growth and advancement of pharmacists in the pharmaceutical industry. He has more than twenty years of experience serving as a preceptor, mentor, and coach to student pharmacists and fellows pursuing industry practice. From 1998-2008 Bimark participated as a fellowship site within the Rutgers Post-Doctoral Program. During that period Jerry offered the marketing services of his company on a pro bono basis to advise, develop, and execute a national campaign on behalf of the Rutgers Fellowship Program and its partner companies.

In 2008, Jerry was honored by the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education (ACME) for his commitment to the professional development of industry pharmacists.

Mr. Silverman began his professional career as a community pharmacist before joining Eli Lilly, where he advanced through positions of increasing responsibility in sales, training, and marketing. He went on to join Searle in CV Marketing, where he directed the strategy and promotion of their cardiovascular portfolio.

Jerry received his BS in Pharmacy from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is an Adjunct Professor at FDU School of Pharmacy.

Sergio Gatoulis, PharmD

VP, Technology and Operations

Sergio Gatoulis, PharmD is the VP, Technology and Operations for IPhO, with responsibility for the systems and infrastructure the helps to power IPhO. He currently works for Pfizer as a Senior Director of Global Clinical Research and remains involved with the fellowship program, providing oversight to the Pfizer/Rutgers fellowship program. Sergio completed his post-doctoral fellowship in the Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program at Bayer HealthCare Consumer Care. During his time as a fellow Sergio managed the maintenance and development of the fellowship website and the transition to digital scheduling of candidate interviews during fellow recruitment at ASHP. Sergio remained with Bayer following completion of his fellowship, working in Global Medical Affairs and Clinical Development. He also served as Chair of the Pharmacists at Bayer employee resource group.

Melissa Rodenbach

Director, Marketing and Communications

Melissa Rodenbach serves as the Director, Marketing and Communications for IPhO. Melissa, a communication graduate of Rutgers University, began her career as the marketing coordinator for the Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program, where she helped to establish the brand's social media presence and email marketing strategy. She then spent a number of years with Haymarket Media/Haymarket Medical Education developing the web presence and digital strategy for Haymarket's extensive roster of properties. During her time with Haymarket, she worked on product development with a focus on user experience for the company's growing audience of clinicians. She is currently working in web marketing with the Rutgers University Foundation communications team.

Leah Palmer, PharmD

Vice President, Student Leadership Development

Leah Palmer, PharmD is currently a consultant in FDA prescription drug promotion regulations. Most recently, she served as Executive Director in Regulatory Affairs at Amgen Inc., as a Regulatory Promotion lead with oversight of a wide range of product promotional activities.

Prior to joining Amgen in 2001, Dr. Palmer was a Branch Chief of one of the enforcement branches in the Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising and Communications (DDMAC, now OPDP) overseeing product advisories and enforcement actions. In addition to her Branch Chief role, she served as DDMAC Senior Enforcement Advisor.

Prior to joining FDA, she completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at Purdue University College of Pharmacy and an Industrial Clinical Pharmacy Fellowship affiliated with Rutgers University and Parke-Davis. She received her B.S. in pharmacy from the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Pharmacy and worked as a clinical pharmacist in various hospitals.
